The fall of Assad raises an issue that I've struggled with for a long time: the emotional and psychological need so many people have to divide the world into good guys and bad guys. Many times, there are no good guys, only bad guys—or more accurately, only the intersection of competing global forces.
That's what we're seeing in Syria. That’s why I thought it would be useful to republish an interview we did in April of 2024, with Mikaela Nhando Erskog of the Tricontinental Institute about their recent report on “hyper-imperialism.” It offers some much-needed perspective on current events in the Middle East:

I am always aware of how we all try to speak to someone's personality in the face of contradictory behavior. It is wrong that yet another person in this country was shot no matter how heinous their business is, however, there is a compulsion to say he was a nice guy also. Ted Bundy was also well liked by those that knew him and he was a serial killer. The judge also felt compelled to compliment Ted's pleasant personality and talent. I know this takes things off topic a bit, but what relevance did the deceased's more private personality have?
