The Spirit of Ferguson (with Sonali Kolhatkar)
Commemorating local, national, and global solidarity.
I’ve been missing and unaccounted for lately, for which I apologize. I came down with another case of Covid, which—despite all the hype—is not “like a cold or mild flu.” At least, it hasn’t been for me, or for the other people I know who have caught it lately.
To get some momentum going, I’m posting the video of a conversation I had this week with journalist and author Sonali Kolhatkar, a regular guest on the program. Our topic was the ten-year anniversary of the Ferguson uprising.
We talked about the role of social media in amplifying the Black Lives Matter movement and the structural violence reflected in Ferguson's policing and court system. We also discussed the militarization of US police and the global solidarity seen in the Ferguson movement, which linked it to other struggles like that of the Palestinian people.
I hope you’ll give it a listen.
